The Attorney General is supposed to be the people's lawyer — Alabama's top law-enforcement officer, answerable to you and no one else. For thirty years, Jeff McLaughlin has been exactly that kind of lawyer: independent, incorruptible, and impossible to buy. He spent a decade in the Legislature without ever taking a campaign donation, and he led the fight to get secret money out of Alabama politics. Now he's ready to bring that same independence to the office that needs it most.

Meet Jeff
Jeff McLaughlin was born in Decatur and raised in Guntersville, where he graduated from Guntersville High School, came home to open a law practice, and raised his family. You've probably seen him around town — riding bikes with his kids, mowing his own yard, talking with neighbors.
Before he was a lawyer, Jeff was a schoolteacher. For more than thirty years he's practiced law in Guntersville, and for ten of those years he represented Marshall County in the Alabama House of Representatives. In Montgomery, he earned a reputation as a principled independent — a legislator who answered to the people who sent him there, not to the lobbyists and the special interests. He wrote the law to protect the Tennessee River, brought TVA dollars back home to the Valley, strengthened protections for victims of domestic violence, and fought to keep Alabama's public schools strong.
And he did it all without ever accepting a campaign contribution. Jeff self-financed every race so that no donor, no corporation, and no party boss could ever call in a favor. He led the years-long fight to ban the secret PAC-to-PAC transfers that let politicians hide who funds them — a reform the Legislature ultimately passed and named after him.
A graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and Harvard Law School, Jeff brought his education home to Alabama instead of cashing in somewhere else. That's the whole idea behind this campaign: your Attorney General will work for YOU.
